The anonymous self-help organizations are not in any way discriminatory. (Uh, um, that has not always been and is not necessarily true now of their local groups.) They are open to everybody, no matter what they believe or don't believe. They have helped millions of people regardless of their mindset when they first stumbled in, and no one with any sense or integrity tries to force newcomers to "get saved" or "follow their bliss."
This list is provided for those who might find it useful, but don't get the idea that anything of a formal, religious nature is part of the program. "Take what you can use, and leave the rest."
Obviously, this page is not officially approved or endorsed by anybody. I found this list on the web in the mid-90's (with the verses listed in the same order you see them below) and I haven't checked out the relevance of every single one of these citations yet, so patience is its own reward.
I've always hoped that this page might be helpful to those who are concerned that the Steps diminish the unique importance of God. Gimme a yell if you have any thoughts, questions, reactions, etc.
Step 1
For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but to perform that which is good I find not. For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. - Romans 7:18-20

The LORD [is] my shepherd; I shall not want. He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul:he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name's sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou [art] with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Step 8
Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels, and have not charity, I am become [as] sounding brass, or
a tinkling cymbal. And though I have [the gift of] prophecy, and understand all mysteries, and all knowledge; and
though I have all faith, so that I could remove mountains, and have not charity, I am nothing. And though I bestow
all my goods to feed [the poor], and though I give my body to be burned, and have not charity, it profiteth me
nothing. Charity suffereth long, [and] is kind; charity envieth not; charity vaunteth not itself, is not puffed up, Doth not behave itself unseemly, seeketh not her own, is not easily provoked, thinketh no evil; Rejoiceth not in iniquity, but rejoiceth in the truth; Beareth all things, believeth all things, hopeth all things, endureth all things. Charity never faileth: but whether [there be] prophecies, they shall fail; whether [there be] tongues, they shall cease; whether [there be] knowledge, it shall vanish away. For we know in part, and we prophesy in part. But when that which is perfect is come, then that which is in part shall be done away. When I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child: but when I became a man, I put away childish things. For now we see through a glass, darkly; but then face to face: now I know in part; but then shall I know even as also I am known. And now abideth faith, hope, charity, these three; but the greatest of these [is] charity. - I Corinthians 13
